Ferrovías Guatemala Director Sergio Paiz Andrade died Sept. 9 in a plane crash in El Salvador.

In 1999, he helped form and attract financing for Ferrovías Guatemala, a 497-mile railroad connecting Guatemala City with Mexico, El Salvador, and Atlantic and Pacific coast ports.

"He was an enthusiastic participant on inspection trips, always available for consultation on matters ranging from business to culture, and a believer in the company's potential for contribution to Guatemala's development," said Henry Posner III, chairman of Ferrovías Guatemala parent company Railroad Development Corp., in a prepared statement.

Andrade supported the creation of a "living museum" in the railway's Guatemala City workshops, and helped Ferrovías Guatemala evolve from a railroad that experienced traffic losses, squatter invasions, abandonment and hurricane-caused destruction in the mid- to late-1990s while government owned into a prospering business.
