Future Transfer Co. Inc. and 42-mile Trillium Railway Co. Ltd. opened a transload facility Oct. 1 in Tillsonburg, Ontario.

The terminal, designed to handle agricultural, industrial and petroleum products and specialty chemicals, includes eight 18,000-gallon storage tanks, 80,000 square feet of warehousing space, a steam device to heat rail cars, and a concrete pad that can accommodate the loading and unloading of 12 rail cars, 24 tanker trucks and six vans.

Trillium Railway provides service to and from St. Thomas, Ontario, where it interchanges with Canadian National Railway Co. and Norfolk Southern Railway. The short line also interchanges with Canadian Pacific Railway in Tillsonburg.

"Communities throughout southwestern Ontario, and beyond, win because we are able to help reduce long-haul road congestion," said Trillium Railway President Wayne Ettinger in a prepared statement.

Future Transfer offers repackaging, warehousing, transport and distribution services to cross-border customers in Iowa, Tennessee, Texas and Pennsylvania.

"We see new business opportunities in western Canada and southern U.S. markets," said Future Transfer President Mike Perovich, adding that the Tillsonburg facility is strategically located between other company facilities.

Future Transfer expects to handle 400 carloads annually in Tillsonburg within two years, at which time the company plans to double the facility's capacity.
