Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Ferrocarril Mexicano S.A. de C.V. (Ferromex) June 18 announced a long-term agreement with Honda Corp. to jointly move time-sensitive auto parts between the automaker's production complex in Marysville, Ohio, and Guadalajara, Mexico.

BNSF and Ferromex, which in early May formed a partnership to operate an integrated carload service crossing the U.S./Mexico border at El Paso, Texas, recently developed a door-to-door intermodal product to move auto parts using BNSF's Mexi-Modal service.

"We developed Mexi-Modal last year so that we could offer customers like Honda seamless door-to-door transborder intermodal service," said Ricci Gardner, BNSF vice president, automotive, in a prepared statement, adding that the new service would enable Honda to daily take several truckloads off the highway.

By crossing the border in El Paso, BNSF and Ferromex officials believe they can offer shippers a more-direct route for carload traffic moving between major U.S. and Mexico markets, and better transit times.
