Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Ferrocarril Mexicano S.A. de C.V. (Ferromex) recently improved their Mexi-Modal transborder intermodal service to reduce transit time between Guadalajara or Mexico City and several major North American markets, including northern and southern California, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City, Toronto and Montreal.

Using BNSF's El Paso, Texas, gateway, the railroads plan to provide a seven- or eight-day service between Los Angeles or Chicago, and Mexico City and Guadalajara, which would match transit times offered by trucks, according to a prepared statement.

"This service will benefit shippers looking for a competitive, cost-effective alternative to over-the-road shipping," said Richard Miller, BNSF assistant vice president, Mexico business.

Last year, BNSF and Ferromex began offering Mexi-Modal service to shippers needing to move time-sensitive automotive parts.
