On Friday, CN announced it signed a memorandum of understanding with the Montreal Port Authority (MPA) to jointly develop supply-chain best practices and boost productivity to increase their transportation market share.

The memorandum of understanding establishes a framework to “develop greater supply-chain efficiencies and to grow our share of freight traffic moving between Europe and markets in Ontario and the U.S. Midwest,” said CN President and Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau in a prepared statement.

The pact also will help strengthen the Port of Montreal’s position as an intermodal gateway serving global markets and improve the port’s rail service, said MPA President and CEO Sylvie Vachon.

“The unique intermodal configuration that allows trains to be organized dockside, directly at the terminals, is a major asset for the Port of Montreal,” she said.

Meanwhile, Union Pacific Railroad on Friday announced it has met certification requirements under the American Chemistry Council’s (ACC) Responsible Care Management System (RCMS) program that governs chemical handling and safety.

Adopted by the ACC in 2002, the program establishes industry-wide standards designed to improve community awareness and emergency response, security, distribution, employee health and safety, pollution prevention and product stewardship.

In a final audit report, the ACC praised the Class I for its hazardous materials and emergency response program, relationships and coordination with local agencies along rights of ways, environmental stewardship, and “strong and multi-faceted” security program, UP officials said in a prepared statement.
