Yesterday, Canadian Pacific Railway announced that Canada Customs and Revenue Agency designated the Class I a low-risk carrier under its Customs Self-Assessment (CSA) program, which would enable CPR to directly deliver U.S. goods to CSA-approved shippers without stopping for border inspections or awaiting customs clearance.
Under the program, CSA-approved shippers must use CSA-approved carriers to obtain border-less entry into Canada; eligible imported goods (including vehicles, vehicle parts and food products) also must be approved by the agency as low risk.
CPR officials believe the Class I is the only CSA-approved North American railway.
"Our low-risk designation under the program means CSA-approved shippers can reduce their costs by shipping on CPR," said CPR President and Chief Executive Officer Rob Ritchie in a prepared statement.
CPR, which applied for CSA approval 18 months ago, expects to increase velocity by more seamlessly moving northbound shipments for CSA-approved customers to their sidings.
