New Hampshire Department of Transportation recently filed a notice of exemption with the Surface Transportation Board to acquire from Maine Central Railroad Co. a 8.3-mile line between Whitefield, N.H., and Gilman, Vt.
Lamoille Valley Railroad Co. (LVRC) and Twin State Railroad Corp. (TSR) currently lease the track, but haven't provided service over the line since October 1999, according to the state's filing.
New Hampshire DOT also claims that 99-mile LVRC and 28-mile TRS haven't maintained the line to begin providing service or comply with applicable laws.
Although it would enable LVRC and TSR to retain operating rights for the line, the state plans to find a new service operator.
Guilford Rail System owns and operates the 738-mile Maine Central Railroad.
