UP seeks FRA waiver to test brakes on trains coming from Mexico at Texas yard instead of at border (10/23/2007)
10/23/2024Union Pacific Railroad is seeking a Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) waiver to perform required brake tests on trains coming from Mexico at a southern Texas yard instead of at the U.S./Mexico border.
UP currently performs brake tests on trains received from Mexican railroads at the border in Eagle Pass, Texas. The Class I proposes to complete FRA-required tests and inspections at its Clarks Park, Texas, yard, which is located 4.8 miles from the border. The waiver will help expedite train moves and prevent traffic blockages in Eagle Pass, UP said in its waiver application.
The Class I is requesting a waiver of compliance from certain requirements of 49 CFR Part 232, which governs brake system safety standards, and other freight-car safety rules.
