U.S. railroads add 123 diesels to the fleet (7/3/1974)

"One hundred and twenty-three more diesels were recently added to the fleet of the major American railroads. This brings the total for the year to 319 new and rebuilt locomotives. For an overall picture, taking into account the number of retired diesels, the total fleet comes to 27,487, representing an aggregate horsepower of 384,600. Now on order are 703 diesels, of which 538 will be new and 165 are to be rebuilt."
