The Wisconsin Department of Transportation yesterday marked the completion of a $22 million reconstruction of the passenger concourse at the Milwaukee Intermodal Station.

The concourse now provides easier access for passengers and resembles the architectural design of the station, which was remodeled in 2007, according to a WisDOT press release.

Construction took 18 months, with final painting completed when Wisconsin spring temperatures were warm enough. Construction was staged to accommodate at least two tracks remaining in operation daily.

The new structure features a custom fabricated 3D tubular truss roof with skylights, a mezzanine spanning five tracks, escalators and elevators, and a rehabilitated passenger tunnel for emergency exits.

More than 1.3 million passengers annually use the station to board Amtrak Hiawatha and Empire Builder trains. Passengers also can access regional and local bus services at the station.
