Starting Sept. 23, Amtrak will offer direct service between Washington Union Station in Washington, D.C., and New York Penn Station in New York City.
The Acela nonstop service initially will operate on weekdays, with one southbound train departing at 6:35 a.m. and one northbound train departing at 4:30 p.m. per day. The travel time is about 2 hours and 35 minutes, Amtrak officials said in a press release.
“The new Acela nonstop service will have you halfway to your New York City or D.C. destination in the time it would take you to board a flight,” said Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Anderson.
Railroad officials say they will consider potential expansion of frequency and location.
The service comes ahead of the 2021 launch of the next-generation Acela trainsets, which also will offer nonstop service between Washington and New York. The trainsets are being manufactured in Hornell, New York.
Washington Union and New York Penn are Amtrak's busiest stations.
