Amtrak plans to renovate the concourse at Chicago Union Station and is seeking project ideas from the traveling public, other station users and area residents through an online survey open through this month.

Improvements to the boarding process, modernized amenities and new services are among the changes to be designed. It will be the first major enhancement at track level and above at the station since 1991, Amtrak officials said in a news release.

Epstein, in partnership with FXCollaborative, will provide design services. Epstein designed the $26.5 million Terminal 5 concessions area at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and a terminal redevelopment project at Chicago Midway International Airport.

FXCollaborative designed the recently opened $24 million Amtrak Metropolitan Lounge and Office Complex in the Moynihan Train Hall for the Amtrak-owned Penn Station in New York City.

Revisions to the concourse will be designed in advance of the Amtrak-owned station's 100th anniversary. The railroad plans to use federal capital funds and contributions from partners to fund both the design and construction elements of the project.

"The station first opened in 1925 and [we] will involve our partners and the general public to develop a preferred design that will take us into the next hundred years," said Jeannie Kwon, Amtrak's vice president of mega programs development and coordination.
