The U.S. Senate has confirmed attorney Anthony Coscia, Aviation Strategies President Joel Szabat and Normal, Illinois, Mayor Christopher Koos as members of Amtrak's board.
Coscia has been Amtrak's chairman since 2013.
The Senate had not confirmed an Amtrak board nominee since 2015. President Joe Biden nominated Koos, Coscia and Szabat as board members in 2022. The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation most recently held a nomination hearing on June 21, 2023, and the nominees cleared the committee on Oct. 18, 2023.
Amtrak is governed by a 10-member board. Members include the secretary of transportation, Amtrak's president and eight individuals appointed by the president and confirmed by the Senate. Amtrak's board sets policy and oversees the management and strategic direction of the railroad.
"I look forward to the work [these new members] will do to enhance the passenger experience and improve reliability," said U.S. Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), who chairs the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, in a news release.
