Amtrak will soon begin a major upgrade to its King Street Yard in Seattle following the award of the design and construction contract to PCL Construction Services Inc.
The $300 million project is funded by the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
As passenger-rail ridership grows in the Pacific Northwest, Amtrak is advancing its New Era of Rail program. The upgraded yard will not only enable more efficient maintenance practices of the trains on the Amtrak Cascades, Coast Starlight and Empire Builder routes, but it will also support the introduction of the new Amtrak Airo trains that are set to begin service in 2026 on the Cascades route, Amtrak officials said in a press release.
Once construction is completed, the upgraded yard will feature a new two-bay maintenance and inspection facility, and a new service and cleaning bay. Current facilities will be relocated within the existing footprint. Regular maintenance services will be maintained throughout the project, which is set to be completed in 2027, Amtrak officials said.
The new facility will also operate without the use of fossil fuels for heating, instead using the region’s available renewable hydroelectric facilities.
