Amtrak has a new captain to lead its 20,000-employee operations team.

The national passenger railroad recently named rail transit veteran William Crosbie to serve as senior vice president, operations.

Crosbie’s rail career began with Canadian Pacific Railway in the signal and communications (S&C) department; at CPR, he worked extensively on the planning and production of S&C circuit designs. In 1996, he joined Toronto Transit Commission as general superintendent of signals, electrical and communication. From 1998 to 1991, Crosbie served as the commission’s general superintendent of subway transportation, managing 950 employees and a $50 million operating budget.

He most recently served as president and chief executive officer of FibreTech Telecommunications Inc., a fiber-optic telecommunications company.

"Bill Crosbie brings us technical knowledge and great operations management experience at a crucial time for Amtrak," said President and CEO David Gunn in a prepared statement.
