Amtrak: Connecticut bridge projects post progress

Three movable bridge projects in Connecticut remain on schedule for completion — one to be completed next month and the others in 2013, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.
The $20 million Miamicock Bridge project, which calls for replacing a railroad bridge over the Pattaganset River, is nearing its completion date set for June’s end. Funded with federal stimulus dollars, the project will result in smoother and more reliable service after replacing an existing 100-year-old bridge and substructure, Amtrak officials said. The project is unique because construction was completed on each track in phases while train service remained active on adjacent track, they said.
Meanwhile, the $125 million Niantic Bridge replacement in East Lyme, Conn., remains on pace for completion in May 2013. Begun in April 2010, the project is being funded by $47.1 million from Amtrak’s capital program and $57.6 million in federal stimulus dollars. Crews soon will begin construction of a new navigation channel bridge pier fender system; installation of an electrical submarine cable crossing under the navigation channel and between the river piers; and completion of the concrete river piers, bridge abutments and the pre-case of a concrete sea wall.
In addition, construction of the East and West Harbor Bridges in Stonington, Conn., resumed this month after a brief hiatus. The $32 million bridge replacement project, which received $16 million in federal stimulus funds, calls for the removal and replacement of the bridges, steel spans, concrete piers and headwalls. The project will increase vertical clearance under the bridge.
