Amtrak and Lyft yesterday announced a new partnership aimed at helping riders complete the first- and last-mile segments of their journeys.

Passengers now can use the Amtrak mobile app to request a ride with the ride-sharing service. First-time Lyft users can receive a $5 credit on each of their first four rides with the service.

Lyft operates in more than 360 communities across the United States and reaches 97 percent of Amtrak riders, according to an Amtrak press release.

The partnership is intended to provide a "seamless end-to-end travel experience" from riders' doorsteps to train stations, Amtrak officials said.

"As a fixture of American travel, Amtrak makes it simple and convenient for passengers, something Lyft feels passionately about as well," said Lyft Chief Business Officer David Baga.
