Amtrak today announced it has updated its website and mobile app to help provide riders with an extra level of confidence and security while traveling.

Amtrak has added a new feature that enables passengers to more easily see how full their reserved train will be. Since bookings are limited on most trains to allow for physical distancing, the quantity of riders traveling is indicated based on the reduced number of seats available, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

In addition to capacity details, Amtrak also updated its app to allow riders to more efficiently book, change and monitor travel.

"Prioritizing health and safety, we continue to provide customers with new, innovative measures that promote physical distancing and contactless travel," said Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer William Flynn. "The improvements made to the app and website will help improve our customers' experience while providing easy access to important travel information."

Several contract-free and convenience measures have been implemented into the Amtrak app. New and existing features include the capacity indicator and seamless gate service to receive gate and track information via push notifications at select stations.

The latest updates will supplement Amtrak's efforts to deliver a new "standard of travel" to help slow the spread of the coronavirus during the pandemic, railroad officials said.

Amtrak has studied, analyzed and made improvements to create as safe an environment as possible so that passengers feel comfortable during their travel experience, Flynn said last week in an interview with Progressive Railroading.

In the article, Flynn — who took over as Amtrak's top executive on April 15 — talked about his and Amtrak's response to the pandemic crisis. The article can be read here.
