Amtrak’s board of directors recently elected David Laney as board chairman, succeeding Mayor John Robert Smith, whose term expired in June.

President Bush appointed Laney to the board in November. He previously served as a member of the Texas Transportation Commission, acting as chair for five of his six-year term.

The board also appointed Sylvia de Leon vice chair, succeeding Gov. Michael Dukakis, whose term ended in June. She has served on the board since 1994.
