Amtrak has announced that $10 million in accessibility upgrades at two Nebraska stations are completed.

The work was performed at the Holdrege and Hastings stations. The Amtrak California Zephyr stops twice daily at the central Nebraska stations while traveling between Chicago and the San Francisco Bay area.

The projects involved new platforms and crossings for boarding from both BNSF Railway Co. tracks as well as a new heated shelter in Holdrege. At the Hastings station, a new 860-foot boarding platform was built and the the passenger waiting area was renovated.

The projects are part of Amtrak’s commitment to create safer, accessible facilities across its network through an accessible stations program. So far, 20 stations now comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act and work at another 30 stations is targeted for completion during the current fiscal year at a forecasted investment of $165 million, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

The railroad expects to to complete the program by 2029.

“With construction, renovation, repair and upgrade projects at stations across the country, station accessibility is a priority we’re actively pursuing with funding from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act,” said David Handera, Amtrak’s vice president of accessibility, stations and facilities.
