Amtrak announced yesterday that Bruce Pohlot has been named chief engineer and Tom Quigley has been appointed to the newly created position of general manager of state-supported services.

Both men will report to Amtrak Vice President of Operations DJ Stadtler, effective Dec. 10.

As chief engineer, Pohlot will be responsible for all construction and maintenance for Amtrak-owned right of way, including track, bridges, buildings, communications, signals and electric traction. He also will direct the engineering department's capital program.

Pohlot spent the past 13 years at Parsons Brinckerhoff, most recently as a senior vice president and president of PB Transit & Rail Inc. Prior to joining the firm, he spent 21 years at Amtrak's engineering department in senior positions in the New York City, Baltimore, Boston and Western divisions. He also served as program director of high-speed rail and assistant vice president, engineering/program management.

As general manager of state-supported services, Quigley will be responsible for ensuring Amtrak's state partners and their customers receive "excellent service," while meeting financial goals and other performance targets, Amtrak officials said in a prepared statement.

Most recently, Quigley was vice president and general manager at Owens Corning. Previously, he held executive positions in marketing and sales at United Technologies, Ingersoll Rand Co., Fortune Brands, the Scotts Co. and Cargill.
