Amtrak has ordered 10 additional Airo trainsets under a contract option with Siemens Mobility, as demand for passenger-rail travel exceeds expectations, Amtrak officials announced yesterday.
The additional units will bring the total contract order to 83 trainsets, Amtrak officials said in a press release. Scheduled to debut in 2026, the Airo trains will operate on routes throughout the country. The train order is being funded by federal dollars Amtrak is receiving under the Infrastructure Investment by Jobs Act.
The Airo trains are in production at Siemens' plant in California. Under the contract, Amtrak can order additional trains if necessary.
The trains are part of Amtrak’s larger transformation that will revolutionize the Amtrak experience, including new Acela trains, major infrastructure projects, service expansion, station upgrades, modernization efforts and improved track capacity that will help support ridership growth, Amtrak officials said.
