Amtrak is soliciting public comments on its plan to procure a modern fleet for its long-distance network that will improve the train travel experience for riders with mobility disabilities.
On Aug. 30, the national intercity passenger railroad will hold a public hearing on accessible train travel and is seeking public feedback via an online form.
Registration to attend the hearing in person should be made at this Amtrak website by Aug. 25. Virtual attendance registration is available at the website until Aug. 30.
Written public input can be made here through Sept. 5.
New train designs and technologies offer opportunities to deliver a better and more accessible experience to riders with mobility disabilities. But strict compliance with existing regulations hinder some of these new alternatives, Amtrak officials say on the project proposal website. After receiving public feedback, Amtrak will submit a request to the Federal Railroad Administration for approval to use alternative design standards that provide equal or better accessibility, they said.
