Starting Aug. 27, Amtrak's Vermonter route will expand to include a stop at Holyoke, Mass.

As part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation's efforts to restore passenger-rail service to the "Knowledge Corridor," service to nearby Northampton and Greenfield, Mass., began in December 2014.

The corridor runs between White River Junction, Vt., and New Haven, Conn., according to MassDOT's website.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided the funding for the project to improve infrastructure along the corridor, Amtrak officials said.

The entire Vermonter route runs daily between Washington, D.C., and St. Albans, Vt.
