Amtrak earlier this week notified the Surface Transportation Board that the on-time performance of Sunset Limited trains operating on Union Pacific Railroad track remains below minimum standards.
On Dec. 8, 2022, Amtrak petitioned the STB to investigate the substandard "customer on-time performance" (COTP) of the Sunset Limited service, including trains 1 and 2 that operate on the route. In its complaint and petition to the board, Amtrak alleged that the trains "unambiguously meet the requirements for a mandatory board investigation because their COTP fell well below 80% for two consecutive calendar quarters," according to Amtrak’s update to the STB.
"COTP on this route has been unacceptably low for at least four consecutive calendar quarters, extending across all of fiscal-year 2022," Amtrak’s update states. "Amtrak’s data now shows that COTP remained substandard during the first quarter of FY 2023."
During Q1 2023, Sunset Limited Train 1 registered 31% COTP and Train 2 registered 26% COTP, according to Amtrak.
"The fact that Sunset Limited trains continue to experience substandard performance, including in the calendar quarter immediately following those quarters on which Amtrak’s complaint is based, underscores the need for an expeditious board investigation that provides Amtrak with appropriate relief," Amtrak’s update states.
