Rail News: Amtrak

Amtrak to combine emergency management, security functions

Yesterday, Amtrak announced it is creating a new emergency management and corporate security department to integrate existing company-wide security efforts into a single, cohesive division. The integration will enable Amtrak officials to more effectively prepare for emergencies and disasters, mitigate their effects and allow for fast and efficient response and recovery, according to a press release.

Eight emergency management-related functions currently overseen by various Amtrak departments will be integrated into the new department, which will focus on emergency preparedness, continuity of operations and corporate security risk strategy. Combining the functions will provide a framework for Amtrak officials to plan for, respond to and recover from incidents while also establishing and maintaining a uniform corporate security strategy.

“The new team will identify opportunities to strategically coordinate, train and put into practice consistent and efficient response and recovery efforts to better ensure the safety and security of our customers and employees,” said Amtrak President and Chief Executive Officer Joseph Boardman in a prepared statement.

Amtrak appointed Susan Reinertson — who currently oversees Amtrak’s recovery and resiliency exercise program, as well as continuity of operations planning — to lead the new department. She has a background in homeland security and emergency management consulting, and leadership experience at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
