Amtrak plans to invest more than $16 million into its Johnstown Station in Pennsylvania as part of the Johnstown Iron-to-Arts Corridor Project.

The improvements are largely related to ADA compliance, part of Amtrak’s Americans with Disabilities Act Stations Program, Amtrak officials said in a press release.

Improvements will include the replacement of the current platform, headhouse, elevator and stairway to build a new headhouse with heat and air conditioning, elevator, stairway, waiting area and storage area. Also included: A new 8-inch above-top-of-rail island platform that will allow for the passage of freight trains and the safe transfer of riders onto Amtrak trains.

The improvementsfall under the Federal Transit Administration’s State of Good Repair Funding program, which will allow the existing passenger tunnel to receive new concrete and lighting maintenance as well as a snow melting system on the new platform. Additionally, the track will be reprofiled to allow for the ATR platform. All construction is set to begin October of next year.

The Johnstown Station project is also receiving a $24.5 million U.S. Department of Transportation Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant.

Construction is slated to begin in October 2022.

"Making our stations accessible to all customers is a critical priority and we are actively performing construction, renovation, repair and upgrades of properties both here in Johnstown and throughout the United States," said Amtrak Assistant Vice President of Stations and Facilities George Holz. "Improvements to the Johnstown Station platforms, tunnels and track will ensure accessible, inclusive and safe experiences for everyone as they travel with us."
