Amtrak will rename its train station in Rochester, New York, after the late U.S. Rep. Louise Slaughter, the railroad announced yesterday.The station will be renamed as a dedication to the congresswoman's career in public service and commitment to leading several projects in northern New York, including the station's development, Amtrak officials said in a press release.Slaughter (D-N.Y.) died last week after sustaining injuries from a fall at her home in Washington, D.C. She was 88 and in the midst of her 16th term representing upstate New York in Congress.The intermodal station in Rochester opened in October 2017. Slaughter secured a $15 million Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant for the project."To celebrate her legacy and impact on the station, city of Rochester, and state of New York, we are pleased to announce that we will be naming Rochester Station in her honor through a commemorative plaque at the station or other appropriate means," said Amtrak Chairman Anthony Coscia.Amtrak will work with the city and state on the details, railroad officials said.New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state and federal officials representing New York had asked Amtrak to rename the station after Slaughter.The Rochester Station is one of the busiest Amtrak stops in New York, serving more than 127,000 passenger trips last year. The Empire Service, Lake Shore Limited and Maple Leaf trains all make stops at the station.
