The city of Carbondale, Illinois, will host a groundbreaking ceremony tomorrow for the Southern Illinois Multimodal Station.
The city is using $18.3 million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Better Utilizing Investment to Leverage Development (BUILD) program to demolish an existing Amtrak station and design and build the multimodal station, city officials said in a press release.
The project also will be supported by $2.8 million in Illinois Department of Transportation Transit Improvement Program funds, as well as $5 million from the city. In February, Fager-McGee Construction Inc. was hired as the project contractor, according to the project website.
To be located in downtown Carbondale, the new facility will be served by Amtrak, Greyhound Bus, Saluki Express and other transportation services. Amtrak’s Illini and Saluki routes currently serve Carbondale.
The groundbreaking ceremony will take place in the north parking lot of the current Amtrak station on South Illinois Avenue. Representing Amtrak at the event will be David Handera, the railroad’s vice president of stations and accessibility.
