Rail News: Amtrak

House FY2006 budget proposes $1.2 billion for Amtrak

On Wednesday, the Senate defeated an amendment that would have provided additional funding for Amtrak in fiscal-year 2006. Yesterday, a similar measure in the House might have gained a bit of Irish luck during a St. Patrick’s day vote. The House passed its FY2006 budget resolution, which includes $1.2 billion for Amtrak, according to the National Association of Railroad Passengers.

House leaders added funding for Amtrak after 21 Republican members wrote to Budget Committee Chairman Jim Nussle (R-Iowa) urging him to provide sufficient funding for the national passenger railroad because "the company is moving in the right direction," the association said.
