Rail News: Amtrak
The state of Illinois will add another Amtrak train on the Quincy, Ill.-to-St. Louis corridor. On Oct. 30, the state and national intercity passenger railroad will begin operating the new train, which will be called the “Carl Sandburg” to honor the late poet.
In addition, the state and Amtrak by month’s end will add trips between Chicago and Quincy, and Chicago and Carbondale, Ill., increasing the number of round trips between Chicago and downstate Illinois from three to seven.
The expanded service is part of a plan announced late last month to more than double state-sponsored Amtrak service in Illinois. In fiscal-year 2006, all Illinois-sponsored Amtrak routes posted record ridership. In spring, the Illinois general assembly increased state funding for Amtrak service from $12.1 million to $24 million.
