Progressive Railroading has named BNSF Railway Co. Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Rose the winner of its Railroad Innovator Award, which recognizes an individual’s outstanding achievement in the rail industry. The magazine will present the award to Rose on Sept. 28 during its RailTrends conference to be held Sept. 28-29 in New York City.

Progressive Railroading is honoring Rose for helping to bring a customer focus to the railroad, while fostering a cooperative and more collegial culture at BNSF. He has “met the challenges of capacity and growth head on, while being able to look ahead without taking his eye off the near-term ball ... and made BNSF that much more attractive as an investment,” Progressive Railroading staff wrote in a press release.

Rose also continues to “bring his brand of big-picture thinking to the table in other capacities — from his work with the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Commission to the OneRail Coalition to his willingness to share his thoughts on legislative and regulatory matters,” the release states.

“Rose has been a respected, effective rail advocate for many years,” said Progressive Railroading Publisher Steve Bolte.

Last year, former CN President and CEO E. Hunter Harrison won the Railroad Innovator Award. He retired from the Class I at 2009’s end and was succeeded by Claude Mongeau.
