Major projects in Texas are another key component of BNSF Railway Co.'s record $4.3 billion capital spending budget for 2013.

The Class I yesterday announced plans to spend $240 million on maintenance and capacity expansion projects in the Lone Star State this year. Capacity projects include the Tower 55 upgrade in Fort Worth, ongoing replacement of the Galveston Causeway Bridge, a siding extension near Somerville, an expansion of the Houston Intermodal Facility, construction of a loop track in San Antonio and signal upgrades for positive train control work.

Track maintenance work includes surfacing and/or undercutting 4,400 miles of track, and replacing 115 miles of rail and 690,000 ties.

"[Our] capital investments in Texas will help ensure our network is prepared for growing demand for freight rail," said BNSF Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Matt Rose in a press release. "We are focused on investing to meet our customers' expectations and on expanding capacity where growth is occurring."

BNSF previously provided details on planned maintenance and capacity expansion projects in Kansas, Missouri, Montana, North Dakota and Washington.
