On Dec. 17, Burlington Northern Santa Fe named John Lanigan executive vice president and chief marketing officer — the successor to Charles Schultz, who plans to retire in mid-2003 after serving the railroad more than 32 years.

Schultz, BNSF's EVP and CMO since June 1999, plans to work with Lanigan to facilitate a smooth transition over the next several months, according to a prepared statement. Schultz also will continue to serve as EVP until his retirement.

Lanigan, 47, plans to join BNSF Jan. 13. In the interim, he will continue to serve as president and chief executive officer of Logistics.com Inc., which is expected to be sold to Manhattan Associates by year end.

Lanigan previously served Schneider National Inc. for 16 years. He joined the trucking firm in 1984 and served in various positions until 1995, when he was named president, transportation sector, responsible for all trucking and intermodal operations. In 1999, he was named chief operating officer, and in 2000, he joined transportation-planning software firm Logistics.com.

"Our growth initiative and five-year revenue targets call for increasing the amount of business we convert to intermodal, said BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Rose. "John's understanding of the truckload and intermodal businesses, along with his proven record of customer service, revenue growth and people leadership, are critical platforms to ensure that BNSF consistently achieves its targets."

Meanwhile, BNSF made several other personnel changes to its marketing team.

The railroad named Marc Allen assistant vice president, automotive; Katie Farmer, assistant vice president, carload equipment, succeeding Allen; Dick Ebel, assistant vice president, intermodal direct marketing, succeeding John Lucas; Ed Zajac, assistant vice president, intermodal/automotive equipment, succeeding Ebel; Lucas, assistant vice president, IMC/truckload marketing, succeeding Zajac; Dave Fleenor, assistant vice president, sales, industrial products; Cal Reynolds, assistant vice president, perishables marketing, succeeding Fleenor; and Thomas Williams, general director, IMC marketing.
