Burlington Northern Santa Fe Sept. 9 expanded its guaranteed intermodal service by adding two lanes between northern California and Dallas/Fort Worth.

The railroad now offers the service in 18 lanes: between Chicago and Phoenix, Seattle, Denver, Dallas/Fort Worth, Portland, Ore., and Stockton, Richmond and San Bernardino, Calif.; between Kansas City, Mo., and Richmond, Stockton and San Bernardino; between St. Paul, Minn., and Seattle and Portland; Stockton-to-Dallas/Fort Worth; Richmond-to-Dallas/Fort Worth; Dallas-to-San Bernardino; San Bernardino-to-Harrisburg, Pa.; and Memphis, Tenn.-to-San Bernardino.

Since BNSF began offering the intermodal service in May 2000, the railroad's moved more than 8,000 guaranteed loads.

"This expansion is designed to attract a greater share of freight moving over the road between northern California and Texas during this busy [peak shipping] season by giving shippers a risk-free transportation alternative," said Steve Branscum, BNSF group vice president, consumer products
marketing, in a prepared statement.

Shippers can purchase the guaranteed service (at a premium) for
international, domestic and perishable intermodal shipments in the 18 lanes.
