Late last month, BNSF Railway Co. began moving rail cars at Logistics Center-Fontana (LCF), the Class I’s new transloading facility in Fontana, Calif. The facility offers warehousing, storage, rail and transloading services.

Designed to handle lumber, agricultural, minerals and other manufactured products, the 38-acre LCF is partially finished. When completed early next year, the facility will feature 45 centerbeam car spots, nine to 18 box-car spots, 50 bulk loading spots, a truck scale, and customized inventory management and security systems. Transportation and logistics firm Tristar Transload Inc. will operate the LCF, which is scheduled to have a grand opening in March.

“The center is designed with a large-capacity inbound and outbound track configuration, which allows blocks of 40 or more cars to be placed to or pulled from the facility quickly,” said Mike Ray of BNSF’s economic development and transload services group in a prepared statement. “This will allow BNSF to offer more capacity to customers in southern California’s busy marketplace while consuming minimal time on [our] mainline.”
