BNSF Railway Co. has launched a program that expands opportunities for short lines, and has signed Genesee & Wyoming Inc. subsidiary Alabama & Gulf Coast Railway (AGR) as the first to participate.

BNSF's new "Shortline Select" program combines the customized service of short lines with BNSF's 32,500-mile network that spans 28 states and three Canadian provinces, according to a BNSF press release.

"Through Shortline Select, we will collaborate closely with AGR to deliver a more streamlined supply chain with enhanced visibility on interchanges, while showcasing our shared commitment to delivering excellent service for our joint customers," said BNSF Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Tom Williams.

AGR provides rail service to industries along the Gulf Coast and into Alabama and Mississippi.

Shortline Select aims to drive growth for customers by improving service performance with participating short lines through enhanced communication, seamless movement tracking, data transparency and faster equipment turns/reduced dwell, BNSF officials said.

As a participant, AGR will collaborate with BNSF on economic development and growth efforts through:
• Premier Transloads. Transload providers on AGR may be included in BNSF's network of more than 400 transloaders across the BNSF system; and
• Certified Sites. Select locations on AGR may be eligible for BNSF’s Certified Site designation, which is an inventory of available, rail-ready industrial sites that are pre-approved for development, increasing speed to market. Additionally, short-line participants will have access to operational process improvements that have predefined economic arrangements with BNSF that enable faster responsiveness to customer rate requests.

“Our collaboration with BNSF will improve service and generate multimodal solutions for those industries and demonstrates that short lines and Class I railroads alike are focused on growth for our customers and the communities we serve," said G&W Chief Customer Officer Mike Peters.
