Yesterday, BNSF Railway Co. announced plans to spend about $93 million in Illinois and $61 million in Iowa this year on capacity expansion and infrastructure improvement projects.
 
In Illinois, crews will surface and undercut 1,216 miles of track, and replace 34 miles of rail and about 270,000 ties.

In Iowa, the railroad plans to continue working on the Burlington bridge by replacing existing through-truss spans, and begin replacing a bridge over the Missouri River between Plattsmouth, Neb., and Pacific Junction, Iowa. In addition, workers will surface and undercut 315 miles of track, and replace 27 miles of rail and about 183,000 ties.

The investments are part of BNSF’s 2012 capital spending budget of $3.9 billion, the largest component of which is $2.1 billion for core network projects and related assets. The Class I also plans to spend about $1.1 billion on locomotive, freight-car and other equipment acquisitions; $400 million for terminal, line and intermodal expansion and efficiency projects; and $300 million for positive train control work.
