Rail News: BNSF Railway

BNSF launches Reload container reuse program, reaches TCU agreement

BNSF Railway has announced the launch of its new Reload program, which allows imported containers to be reused for West Coast-bound U.S. shipments before they are sent back overseas.

The service facilitates access to a full network of empty containers, allowing for the more efficient transport of goods, lowering costs for shippers and offering more economical logistics within the supply chain, BNSF officials said in a press release.

“This new option is a win-win for everyone,” said Group Vice President of Consumer Products Jon Gabriel. “It provides more optionality for our customers and American producers, maximizes equipment balance and is more cost-effective, while expanding capacity solutions for products best suited for a 20-foot or 40-foot container and is better for the environment.”

Reload is similar to BNSF’s Matchback program, which matches empty import containers with export commodities, such as grain and other agricultural products, BNSF officials said.

Meanwhile, BNSF and the Transportation Communications Union/IAM (TCU) have reached a new tentative collective agreement, which covers 37 employees at the company’s Fort Worth headquarters.

The agreement, subject to ratification by union members, would provide wage increases totaling 17.5% over five years (18.8% compounded) with retroactive pay beginning July 1, 2025, as well as accelerated enhancements in vacation and preserved health care benefits, BNSF officials said. More than 96% of BNSF’s workforce is currently covered under tentative or ratified agreements.
