BNSF Railway Co. logged record agricultural volume in October, with a 7% increase in volume and velocity compared with the same month a year ago, the Class I announced yesterday. The agricultural volume includes the grain harvest.

BNSF handles more agricultural product shipments than any other U.S. railroad and has partnered with American grain producers for more than 170 years, BNSF officials said in a press release.

“We carefully plan for harvest, every year, and thank our agricultural producers for trusting us to deploy all our assets to the best of our ability, so we can provide reliable service during this important time of year," said Angela Caddell, group vice president of agricultural and energy products.

Meanwhile, BNSF announced that members of the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers (IBB) who work for the railroad have voted to ratify a new five-year, collective bargaining agreement with the Class I.

The agreement gives covered employees unprecedented certainty about upcoming enhancements to their pay, health care and vacation. The tentative agreement called for a 3.5% average wage increase per year over five years.

“This was an all-around great agreement, from wage increases to a better insurance package and vacations,” said IBB Director of Railroad Lodge Services John Mansker in a press release.
