BNSF Railway Co. yesterday resumed operations of Montana Rail Link (MRL), which now is part of the Class I's Montana subdivision.

In March 2023, the Surface Transportation Board approved MRL’s petition to conclude its long-term lease with BNSF. Under the lease, which began in 1987, MRL operated the BNSF line between Huntley, Montana, and Sandpoint, Idaho.

In early 2022, the railroads announced an agreement under which BNSF would resume operations of its mainline through southern Montana.

"MRL has a strong reputation of safety and service, and we look forward to carrying forward that proud legacy," said BNSF President and CEO Katie Farmer in the Class I's Rail Talk blog.
