BNSF ramps up new Chicago-area automotive facility
advertisement
Burlington Northern Santa Fe Sept. 5 opened an automotive facility in Elwood, Ill., (near Joliet) — the first operational component of a 400-acre multi-modal center the railroad's building south of Chicago.
BNSF plans in October to begin intermodal operations at the center, which is designed to coordinate and handle direct-rail, transload and intermodal shipments, according to a prepared statement.
The railroad expects to move automotive traffic currently handled in Naperville, Ill., to the Elwood facility about Sept. 15, at which time the Naperville facility would close.
BNSF plans to use the Elwood facility — a dedicated terminal designed for building automotive trains — to improve its interchange efficiency, and increase non-stop daily train starts to and from western markets.
