Yesterday, BNSF Railway Co. announced it was selected by the Port of Los Angeles to co-develop and operate a container transfer facility with direct access to the Alameda Corridor.

To be located about five miles north of the port near a classification yard, the facility will be designed to transfer containers from trucks serving the port to rail cars. BNSF will move the containers through the Alameda Corridor to various nationwide destinations.

"The new facility would significantly increase our capacity to service the ports' customers and strengthen the role of international trade in the southern California economy," said BNSF Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer Matthew Rose in a prepared statement.

BNSF officials plan to work with port and local government representatives to ensure the facility incorporates environmentally friendly technology.
