BNSF Railway Co. will serve a new $40 million bulk-sugar storage facility on its network in Montgomery, Ill.

American Crystal Sugar recently opened the facility on BNSF's network. The facility includes a 26,000-square-foot storage dome, a 17,000 square-foot transfer facility and 5,500 feet of track space, according to a post on BNSF's website.

The dome, which is 134 feet high and 183 feet wide, has the capacity to store 60,000 metric tons of sugar and will transfer nearly twice that much to customers each year. The facility is the largest freestanding sugar storage unit not attached to a sugar-producing factory in the United States.

BNSF trains will begin delivering product to the facility this month.
