BNSF Railway Co. has designated a transload facility operated by Sands Spring Railway Co. in Oklahoma a "premier status" location.
The designation means the short line provides superior performance, markets a comprehensive service offering and maintains a minimum capacity level at the Tulsa facility. BNSF bestows a limited number of premier status designations during the course of a year, said officials at OmniTRAX Inc. — which owns Sands Spring Railway— in a press release.
The short line has direct connections with BNSF and Union Pacific Railroad, and handles steel, pulpboard, scrap iron and paper, petroleum products, plastics, and lumber.
As part of the nomination process for the designation, Sand Springs Railway's transload facility was vetted using a survey to determine the freight being moved and the services offered. Interviews then were held with BNSF's transload team, the survey was reviewed and a site visit was conducted to verify services.
"BNSF is a great partner of [ours] and this honor will serve to redouble our efforts on behalf of our joint customers," said OmniTRAX Chief Executive Officer Kevin Shuba. "The designation helps validate our capabilities in this quickly growing sector."
OmniTRAX also is leasing 100,000 square feet of covered warehouse space with heavy lift equipment to serve the transload needs of steel and building products shippers in Oklahoma.
