MBTA to improve radio communication systems in underground tunnels, stations

The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), Executive Office of Public Safety and Mayor’s Office of Emergency Preparedness recently reached a funding agreement to improve emergency communications infrastructure in the authority’s underground stations and tunnels.

The parties will install new radio systems improve communications between state and local emergency first responders, and MBTA. The two-phase project includes installing new equipment and reallocating existing frequencies, and adding radio channels.

MBTA has committed $4 million in U.S. Department of Homeland Security and Federal Transit Administration funds for the $8 million first phase; the Executive Office of Public Safety and Office of Emergency Preparedness each have committed $2 million in Homeland Security funds.
