Updates from Wabtec, Cattron, Vanasse Hangen Brustlin, Pacer and Entrust

• Wabtec Corp. is establishing joint ventures Wabtec South Africa and FIP Brakes South Africa (FIPSA) to manufacture, supply and service a broad range of products in the African nation. The company named Andrae Nieuwoudt managing director of the joint ventures, which will retain South Africa's Sibanye Brakes as a minority partner. Wabtec South Africa will supply and service various Wabtec products, including locomotive and freight-car braking equipment, draft gears, transit equipment and electronics. The unit also will install electronically controlled pneumatic braking equipment on locomotives and cars for South Africa's Transnet Freight Rail. FIPSA will produce friction products and provide access to Wabtec's worldwide friction technology and research capabilities.

• Cattron Group International has appointed Martin Chen marketing and sales manager-China. He will be responsible for directing marketing and sales operations, developing strategic business relationships and expanding Cattron's distributor sales network in China. Chen has more than 16 years' experience in U.S. and German industrial markets, and more than 12 years' experience in sales and marketing positions. Cattron provides industrial wireless remote-control products and aftermarket services to the rail, material handling, mining, commercial and mobile markets.

• Integrated transportation, land development and environmental services firm Vanasse Hangen Brustlin Inc. has named Michael Lambert director of mid-Atlantic transit and rail. He has 30 years of experience as a transportation planning consultant, including transit-rail and bus feasibility studies and alternatives analyses. Lambert has managed projects for Miami Metrorail. MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Long Island Rail Road, Malaysia's light-rail system and Bangalore, India's elevated light-rail system.

• Third-party logistics and freight transportation provider Pacer International Inc. reported second-quarter revenue of $518.4 million and net income of $13.8 million vs. $474.9 million and $12.5 million, respectively, in second-quarter 2007. Income from intermodal operations increased by $7.5 million to $405.7 million, but logistics segment income declined by $3.4 million to $112.9 million because of excess capacity, declining prices, and higher transportation and fuel costs, which negatively affected the company's trucking units, Pacer said.

• Entrust Inc. is extending a communication security system for BNSF Railway Co. to provide employee authentication, secure messaging, device authentication, secure file and folder capabilities, and hard-disk encryption. Entrust's Authority Security Manager system is designed to manage digital identities, or the digital keys and certificates that are necessary to automate all security-related processes in an organization.
