• L.B. Foster Co. obtained a contract from Caltrain to supply 1,812 tons of 136-pound continuous-welded rail (CWR) for future capital improvements on the 145-year-old railroad. Rail deliveries will begin late in the third quarter. L.B. Foster also will supply 1,813 tons of 136-pound CWR for the Southern California Regional Rail Authority's Metrolink in Los Angeles. Delivery will be completed in the fourth quarter.

• Alstom Transport received an order for Belgian national railway SNCB for 956 pieces of equipment for the introduction of the TBL1+ safety system on locomotives and power cars. Last year, Alstom obtained an order from SNCB for 866 hardware devices for the system, which is designed to trigger automatic braking at speeds exceeding 25 mph when a train approaches a stop signal. The system also provides automatic braking when signals are crossed and supports the transmission standard of the European Railway Traffic Management System (ERTMS). Alstom also is supplying the level 1 and 2 ERTMS system to equip 120 locomotives and 81 cars.

• A Bombardier Transportation/Site SpA consortium won a contract from Croatia's Central Finance & Contracting Agency to install Interflo 250 ETCS Level 1 equipment between Vinkovci and Tovarnik. The 21-mile line to the Serbian border, which forms part of Pan-European Corridor X between Austria and Greece, is being upgraded to accommodate train speeds up to 99 mph. Bombardier will supply and commission EBI Lock 950 computer-based interlockings and wayside equipment, and test a train equipped for ETCS Level 1.

• RailComm Inc. obtained an order from BNSF Railway Co. to provide a complete automation system to control derails within Amarillo Yard in Texas. RailComm will install its Operator Control Panel to provide wireless remote control functionality for several bi-directional derail locations in the yard. Proximity detection loops will provide "over the derail" protection to prevent a derail from being remotely operated when a locomotive is in a protection zone. RailComm's 2.4 GHz RADiANT™ data radios will provide a wireless communications network to link the control panel with field locations.

• Third-party logistics provider Transplace Inc. has appointed Bill Hale vice president of marketing and business development. He most recently was director of sales and marketing for Daylight Transport. Hale previously served ABF Freight Systems Inc. in various capacities.
