Rail News: Communication and Signal

WMATA installs new public-address system

Station announcements should sound quite a bit clearer for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) passengers. The agency recently completed a $7.5 million initiative to upgrade public-address systems at 38 underground rail stations.

The authority also installed public-address speakers on most of the station platform pylons and walls. Speakers previously were installed behind the parapet walls and sound quality often was poor, according to WMATA.

In addition, the authority replaced the Rail Operations Control Center radio communications system, which WMATA has used since its 1976 opening. The system has declined in both performance and reliability, WMATA said.
