CSX Transportation recently contracted MCI to provide satellite services at the railroad's remote eastern operating locations, and expand its broadband access services to include satellite options with higher bandwidth capabilities and international coverage.

CSXT plans to use the satellite services to improve communications at remote yards.

"We needed a ubiquitous communications solution that was able to connect our remote locations back to the corporate network," said Tom Blady, CSX Technology assistant vice president of communication solutions, in a prepared statement.

MCI provides broadband satellite services in the United States, Mexico, Canada, the Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and Guatemala.
